Business and the meaning of machine learning
Machine learning is a wide term and it covers two disciplines: one discipline is machine learning research, another discipline is applied machine learning. Business should have a good understanding of the difference between these two, otherwise it might fail hiring people with wrong skills and setting wrong expectations.
Machine learning research is about building algorithms, whereas applied machine learning is about how to use these algorithms. In order to do machine learning research, you need a lot of education, whereas for the applied machine learning you need the right team with variety of skills. The hardest part o machine learning is what you want to know and how you want to test it.
All aspects of applied machine learning are covered by decision intelligence engineering which is regarded as a new discipline.
